We always try our best to challenge your artistic abilities and produce some interesting, beautiful and creative artwork, and as designers we usually turn to different sources of inspiration. As a matter of fact, we’ve discovered the best one — desktop wallpapers that are a little more distinctive than the usual crowd. This creativity mission has been going on for seven years now, and we are very thankful to all designers who have contributed and are still diligently contributing each month.

This post features free desktop wallpapers created by artists across the globe for August 2015. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free. It’s time to freshen up your wallpaper!

Please note that:

  • All images can be clicked on and lead to the preview of the wallpaper,
  • You can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our Desktop Wallpaper Calendars series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

A Bloom Of Jellyfish

“I love going to aquariums – the colours, patterns and array of blue hues attract the nature lover in me while still appeasing my design eye. One of the highlights is always the jellyfish tanks. They usually have some kind of light show in them, which makes the jellyfish fade from an intense magenta to a deep purple – and it literally tickles me pink. On a recent trip to uShaka Marine World, we discovered that the collective noun for jellyfish is a bloom and, well, it was love-at-first-collective-noun all over again. I’ve used some intense colours to warm up your desktop and hopefully transport you into the depths of your own aquarium.” — Designed by Wonderland Collective from South Africa.

August Is So Sweet!

“August is here at last and that means - for the most of us - that it’s time for some real vacation! Take your friends and loved ones and enjoy the last month of summer. No matter where you choose to go, don’t forget... watermelons and ice-cream are a-must-have company this time of year!” — Designed by WebOlution from Greece.

Lonely Sea

“During a vacation by the Saint Lawrence river, I noticed many animals travelling alone although they historically travel in groups. Among those: sea birds, fish, and sea mammals such as whales. The reason for those lonely trips is most often a lack of sufficient food. This creation is both highly emotional as well as a call to an environmental reality.” — Designed by Audrey Pelletier from Canada.

“August is the month where many get back to school. While it may be sad to leave the summer fun, going back is a great opportunity to begin a new cycle in our lives. Please note that we respect and carefully consider the ideas and motivation behind each and every artist’s work. This is why we give all artists the full freedom to explore their creativity and express emotions and experience throughout their works. This is also why the themes of the wallpapers weren’t anyhow influenced by us, but rather designed from scratch by the artists themselves.

A big thank you to all designers for their participation. Join in next month!

Creating Advanced Animations In Photoshop

by Stephen Petrany

While animation in Photoshop is not a new concept, it definitely has come a long way in the last few years: The Timeline panel has been overhauled, video layers have been introduced, as has the ability to create keyframe animation. These additions have really upped Photoshop’s game. Even though Photoshop is still a long way off from being able to create the high-end and cinematic...
